World Cup winner Griezmann announces shock retirement from French national team
Antoine Griezmann has announced his retirement from international football, concluding a remarkable decade with the French national team that saw him rise to prominence as one of its key players. The 33-year-old midfielder shared the news on social media, expressing deep emotion over his decision after a storied career that includes a World Cup victory in 2018 and a runner-up finish in 2022.
“Today, it is with deep emotion that I’m announcing my retirement as a player of the France team,” Griezmann stated. “After 10 incredible years marked by challenges, successes and unforgettable moments, it is time for me to turn a page and make way for the new generation. Wearing this jersey was an honour and a privilege.”
Griezmann, affectionately known as ‘Grizou’, has been a fan favorite and a respected figure among his teammates. He was instrumental during France’s World Cup campaigns, showcasing his versatility in midfield. In addition to his World Cup triumph, he was the tournament’s top scorer at Euro 2016, where France finished as runners-up.
With 137 caps and 44 goals for Les Bleus, Griezmann’s legacy is underscored by his record of 84 consecutive appearances, a testament to his importance in the national setup. Even as the captaincy has transitioned to Kylian Mbappe, Griezmann has remained a pivotal voice within the squad.
French coach Didier Deschamps praised Griezmann’s contributions, stating, “We’ve had a long discussion about (his retirement) recently. Since his debut in the France team 10 years ago we’ve had a relationship based on trust and frankness. Even if his club career is not over, Antoine will remain a monument of French football, one of the greatest players in its history.”
Griezmann’s international retirement follows that of Olivier Giroud, marking a significant transition for the French team as they look to integrate a new generation of players. The Atlético Madrid star also played a crucial role in France’s victory in the 2021 Nations League and stands as the fourth all-time leading scorer for the national team.
Despite stepping away from international duties, Griezmann continues to perform at the club level, with three goals in nine appearances for Atlético Madrid this season. His departure from the national scene leaves a significant void, but his impact on French football will be felt for years to come.
