WHO clears Bavarian Nordic’s vaccine as first shot against mpox
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Friday that Bavarian Nordic’s vaccine has been officially cleared as the first vaccine against mpox. This pre-qualification marks the vaccine as a standard for procurement, particularly benefiting developing countries.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, emphasized the significance of this approval, stating, “This first prequalification of a vaccine against mpox is an important step in our fight against the disease, both in the context of the current outbreaks in Africa and in future.”
Mpox, a viral infection transmitted through close contact, is typically mild but can be fatal. Last month, the WHO declared mpox a public emergency of international concern, highlighting the urgency of enhanced preventive measures.
