Veteran Journalist B R P Bhaskar Passes Away in Kerala

Babu Rajendra Prasad Bhaskar, a revered journalist and human rights activist, breathed his last in Thiruvananthapuram today. He was 92 years old. Bhaskar’s illustrious career spanned over seven decades, during which he held key editorial positions at various national newspapers.
Born in 1932 in Kayikkara, Kollam, Bhaskar’s early life was influenced by his parents, A K Bhaskar (owner of Navabharatham daily) and Meenakshi. He began his journalistic journey as a trainee journalist at The Hindu in 1952. Throughout his career, he worked as an editor at several prominent newspapers, including The Hindu, The Statesman, and Patriot. His contributions extended beyond India; he even wrote as a columnist for Gulf Today newspaper in Sharjah.
In his later years, Bhaskar battled age-related macular degeneration and eventually moved to a geriatric care center in Chennai in 2023. His personal life was marked by tragedy, with the loss of his wife Rama in 2023 and his daughter Bindu Bhaskar Balaji in 2019.
Hundreds paid their respects as his mortal remains were laid for public homage at the Press Club in Thiruvananthapuram and his residence. The body was cremated at Santhikavadom, Thycaud, Thiruvananthapuram.
Bhaskar’s legacy as a journalist and activist will continue to inspire generations. His biography, News Room, received the 2022 Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in the biography and autobiography category12.
