Iranian attack on Israel
The White House has declared that the threat of an attack by Iran on Israel is “real and credible.” This announcement comes amidst escalating tensions following an airstrike that killed senior Iranian commanders nearly two weeks ago. Concerns have grown over the possibility of Iran retaliating, with US officials indicating that a major attack on Israel could happen imminently.
According to reports from US officials, Iran could potentially employ over 100 drones, dozens of cruise missiles, and possibly ballistic missiles targeting military installations in Israel. However, there remains a possibility that Iran might choose to refrain from such actions.
In response to these developments, President Joe Biden has reaffirmed the United States’ unwavering support for Israel in the event of an Iranian attack. This has led to heightened warnings from countries like the US, UK, India, and Australia against traveling to Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has convened meetings with his war cabinet amid these warnings, though some Israelis have expressed resilience in the face of potential threats. Nevertheless, preparations have been made in Israel, including assessments of public shelters and the cancellation of home leave for combat troops.
The tensions have prompted diplomatic efforts to dissuade Iran from launching an attack, with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken engaging with foreign ministers of key countries to seek their influence with Iran. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has emphasized the strengthened bond between Israel and the US in response to the threat, affirming Israel’s readiness to defend itself.
The situation remains fluid, with concerns about potential wider regional implications if hostilities escalate further.
