Untreated sinusitis can lead to life-threatening complications, case at New Delhi hospital shows
In a dramatic illustration of the potential dangers of untreated sinusitis, a recent case at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) in New Delhi has brought to light the severe risks associated with this common condition.
Dr. RG, a 27-year-old physician, suffered a sudden loss of vision in his right eye after experiencing months of nasal obstruction. A CT scan revealed a diagnosis of nasal polyposis and fungal sinusitis, which had progressed to compress his optic nerve within the sphenoid sinus.
Dr. Varun Rai, an ENT Consultant at SGRH, described the situation as critical: “These surgeries are extremely specialized because the optic nerve is very delicate and the slightest misstep can lead to permanent blindness.”
Dr. RG underwent an emergency sinus surgery involving endoscopic optic nerve decompression. Surgeons successfully removed the fungal infection, which had spread throughout the sinuses and between the nerve and brain layer. Remarkably, Dr. RG’s vision was restored to normal within two days following the surgery.
Dr. Rai emphasized the severity of the case, stating, “This case highlights the rarity of the condition and the potential consequences of untreated sinusitis, which can lead to devastating complications.”
Despite the increasing awareness and improved diagnostic capabilities reducing the frequency of such severe cases, Dr. Manish Munjal, Senior ENT Consultant at SGRH, noted a troubling trend: “We’re observing a rise in such cases due to escalating pollution levels, which contribute to nasal allergic responses.”
Doctors stress the importance of early diagnosis, particularly through endoscopic examinations and CT scans, to prevent such severe outcomes. Typical symptoms of sinusitis include nasal stuffiness and discharge, and timely intervention remains crucial in avoiding serious complications.
