UN Human Rights chief demands transparency from Bangladesh amidst violent crackdown on protests

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on Thursday urgently called for the Bangladesh government to disclose comprehensive details about last week’s violent crackdown on protests, which has resulted in significant casualties and widespread suffering. Türk’s appeal comes amid mounting reports of egregious human rights violations, including the deaths of over 170 individuals, injuries to more than a thousand, and the reported killing of at least two journalists.

The protests, led primarily by students and youth movements in opposition to government policies, have seen many demonstrators denied medical care, with numerous individuals still unaccounted for. The government has also faced criticism for its response, including allegations of violent attacks by groups allegedly affiliated with state entities, as noted by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Türk criticized the Bangladeshi authorities for their failure to protect civilians and called for an immediate restoration of full Internet access, which has been restricted. “Blunt measures such as a blanket deliberate Internet shutdown for a prolonged period contravene international law and severely impact fundamental freedoms including freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly,” Türk stated. He emphasized that such shutdowns can exacerbate the lack of transparency and heighten impunity for law enforcement actions.

The High Commissioner has urged the Bangladeshi government to provide detailed information on the individuals affected by the crackdown and to ensure that no reprisals are taken against those involved in the protests. He also stressed the need for an impartial, independent investigation into the alleged human rights violations, with support from his office if required.

Looking ahead, Türk underscored the importance of comprehensive security sector reforms to prevent future abuses and safeguard democratic rights. He expressed hope that the recent decision by the Supreme Court to narrow the government job quota system—an issue that sparked the protests—might serve as a foundation for constructive dialogue and reconciliation.

Türk appealed to all political actors to refrain from actions or statements that could incite further violence or provoke additional crackdowns. The international community is closely watching the situation, with calls for respect for human rights and the restoration of democratic norms in Bangladesh.
