UK destroyer thwarts red sea drone attack
A suspected attack drone targeting merchant shipping in the Red Sea was successfully taken down by the UK destroyer HMS Diamond, according to Defense Minister Grant Shapps. The incident underscores heightened maritime tensions in the region. HMS Diamond, a Type 45 destroyer, has been deployed to the Gulf to ensure freedom of navigation, reassure merchant vessels, and maintain the safe flow of trade.
The deployment follows recent conflicts between Israel and Hamas and the seizure of an Israeli-linked cargo vessel by Iranian-backed Yemeni Huthi rebels in the Red Sea. Shapps emphasized that these illegal attacks pose a direct threat to international commerce and maritime security in the Red Sea. The UK remains committed to repelling such attacks to safeguard the free flow of global trade, he added.
