“Tragic Drone Attack: 3 U.S. service members killed, 25 injured in Jordan base strike”
Three U.S. service members lose their lives, while 25 sustain injuries in a drone strike on a Jordanian base, according to the United States.
An unmanned aerial drone attack on a base in Jordan resulted in the death of three American service members and injuries to 25 others, according to President Biden and the U.S. military. The president attributed the attack to “radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq.” The incident occurred at a base in northeast Jordan, near the Syrian border. U.S. Central Command reported 25 wounded individuals and stated that the identities of the deceased would be withheld for 24 hours to notify their families.
This attack unfolded amidst escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran’s proxies in the region. The Houthi rebels in Yemen, backed by Iran, had previously targeted shipping vessels in the Red Sea in protest of Israel’s conflict with Hamas. The U.S. and its allies initiated airstrikes against the Houthi rebels in Yemen. In a separate incident, the Houthis launched a missile at the USS Carney, marking the first time they had targeted a U.S. warship; however, the missile was successfully intercepted by the destroyer with no injuries reported.
Earlier, two Navy SEALs were reported lost at sea in an attempt to board an Iranian vessel delivering “advanced conventional weapons” to the Houthi rebels. President Biden condemned the attack in Jordan as “despicable and wholly unjust,” pledging to hold those responsible accountable at a time and in a manner of the U.S.’s choosing.
