Harvard Expert Reveals Top 5 Brain-Boosting Breakfast Options
Dr. Uma Naidoo, a Harvard-trained psychiatrist, nutrition expert, and professional chef, has dedicated over 20 years to studying “brain foods” – dietary choices that enhance mental fitness. Now, she’s sharing her top five breakfast options to kickstart your day on a healthier note.
Many traditional breakfast choices, Naidoo explains, are laden with sugars and simple carbohydrates, leading to blood sugar spikes followed by crashes. Moreover, they contribute to brain inflammation, causing issues like brain fog and poor concentration.
In an interview with CNBC Make It, Naidoo, who also serves as the director of Nutritional, Lifestyle, and Metabolic Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, recommends starting the day with a glass of water to combat dehydration and anxiety.
Here are Naidoo’s five breakfast recommendations aimed at improving overall health and mental well-being:
1.Chia Pudding: This homemade treat is packed with fiber, nurturing healthy gut bacteria, and reducing inflammation in the microbiome. It also contains omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory effects on the brain, aiding mood enhancement and cognitive health.
2.Eggs Scramble or Omelet: Eggs are rich in healthy fats, proteins, and vitamins crucial for brain health. The yolks, in particular, offer vitamin D and serotonin, helping maintain mood regulation by optimizing neurotransmitter balance.
3.Tofu Scramble: Tofu, a versatile protein source, is rich in tryptophan and soy isoflavones, known to alleviate symptoms of depression. Naidoo recommends a savory tofu scramble seasoned with turmeric, black pepper, and sea salt as an egg-free alternative.
4.Green Smoothie: Blend spinach with berries, clean protein powder, and healthy fats like hemp seeds or almond butter for a nutrient-packed smoothie. Folate from leafy greens is essential for neurotransmitter production, positively impacting mood and mental health.
5.Milk and Turmeric: While not a standalone meal, a golden milk turmeric latte offers nourishment and a morning boost. Combining unsweetened plant milk with turmeric and black pepper creates a potent anti-inflammatory drink that reduces anxiety, boosts energy, and enhances focus.
By incorporating these brain-boosting breakfast options into your routine, you can set the tone for a productive and mentally sharp day ahead.
