The first water metro in India opens in Kochi; more information is available here.
PM Narendra Modi launched off the first phase of India’s first water metro on Tuesday (April 25, 2023) in Kochi. This is unquestionably a welcome addition to India’s current water transportation system.
The Kochi Water Metro is the name of this water transportation service, according to reports. The metro train system is connected to this unique boat service. You ask how? The Kochi Metro Rail Corporation Limited is in charge of the project. Similar to how we have metro feeder bus services, these boats will serve as a feeder service
These boat services have formal terminals, passenger entry and exit gates, and the look and feel of the Kochi Metro.
According to sources, the boat service will start in earnest on April 26, 2023. There will be two routes initially: High Court – Vypin and Vyttila – Kakkanad. Eight service feeder boats are being prepared to begin the service. This new service is available every day from 7 AM to 8 PM.
Additionally, these feeder boats—which are anticipated to connect multiple islands—are battery-powered, cooled, and accessible to those with disabilities. Since they are battery-powered, these metro boats will also be environmentally friendly.
One ride will cost INR 20 for anyone interested in using the service. Additionally, one can purchase the Kochi One Card or weekly/monthly boat passes. The Kochi One Card is accepted on both feeder boats and Kochi Metro.
