Thai PM Srettha Thavisin ousted for unethical cabinet appointment

Thailand’s Constitutional Court dismissed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Wednesday, citing his appointment of a former lawyer who had served jail time as a breach of ethical standards. Srettha, a real estate tycoon who assumed office less than a year ago, is now the fourth Thai premier in the past 16 years to be removed by the court’s verdicts.

The court’s ruling underscores ongoing political instability in Thailand, where frequent coups and judicial decisions have destabilized multiple governments and political parties. Srettha’s dismissal triggers the need for parliament to convene and select a new prime minister, further contributing to the nation’s uncertain political landscape.

This decision follows the court’s recent dissolution of the anti-establishment Move Forward Party on August 9. The court ruled that the party’s campaign to reform laws against insulting the monarchy posed a threat to the constitutional monarchy. In response, the Move Forward Party has reformed under a new name, continuing its efforts despite the setback.

The rapid developments reflect Thailand’s long-standing challenges with political instability and judicial intervention, leaving the country in a precarious position as it navigates yet another leadership transition.
