Taiwan rattled by quakes again

On Saturday, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit just off Taiwan’s eastern county of Hualien, according to the island’s weather administration. There have been no immediate reports of damage. The quake was felt in the capital, Taipei, shaking buildings. The earthquake had a depth of 24.9 km (15.5 miles), as reported by the weather administration.

Taiwan, situated near the convergence of two tectonic plates, is susceptible to earthquakes. Following a 7.2 magnitude quake that struck Hualien earlier this month, resulting in the loss of 17 lives, the region has been rocked by over 1,000 aftershocks.

In 2016, a devastating earthquake in southern Taiwan claimed the lives of more than 100 people. Similarly, in 1999, a powerful 7.3 magnitude quake resulted in the loss of over 2,000 lives. These tragic events underscore the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity.
