Sri Lanka’s Praveen Jayawickrama banned for one year over anti-corruption violations

Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama has been banned from all forms of cricket for one year, with six months of the ban suspended, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Wednesday. The 26-year-old spinner admitted to violating the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code, specifically breaching Article 2.4.7, which pertains to obstructing investigations conducted by the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU).

The violations involved actions that hindered the investigation process, including the concealment, tampering with, or destruction of documents and information relevant to potential corrupt activities. Jayawickrama, who last played for Sri Lanka in 2022, has participated in five Tests, five ODIs, and five T20Is, taking a total of 32 wickets across these formats.

The charges against him relate to incidents occurring both in international cricket and during the Lanka Premier League. This ban underscores the ICC’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the sport, as it continues to combat corruption in cricket worldwide.
