Sinner to play in French

Jannik Sinner has expressed uncertainty about his participation in the French Open, stating that he will only enter the tournament later this month if he completely heals from a hip injury that led to his withdrawal from Madrid and Rome.

Sinner incurred the injury during his match in Madrid and withdrew from his quarter-final against Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, prompting his decision to skip the Rome tournament scheduled from May 8-19.

The 22-year-old, who secured his first Grand Slam victory at the Australian Open in January, revealed that the injury was more severe than initially thought.

“I’ll only compete at Roland Garros if I’m fully recovered; if there’s any doubt, we’ll have to assess,” Sinner informed reporters.

“Some injuries are avoidable, while others aren’t. So far, we’ve managed well; last year, I had a full season without injuries, and the same has been true for this season.”

Sinner indicated that he might prioritize his health over participating in the second Grand Slam of the year, starting on May 26.

“Now, I’ll take a break from playing… we’ll need to plan our approach starting from next week,” he concluded.

“Our preparation for Roland Garros won’t be ideal. We’ll strive to arrive in the best possible shape for competition, but entering a Grand Slam without matches in Rome presents its challenges.

“The MRI revealed that something isn’t fully healed. Nevertheless, we’re managing the situation. If it doesn’t fully recover, I’ll extend my break. Prioritizing body care is paramount.”
