Severe cyber attack targets Russian foreign ministry amid BRICS summit
The Russian Foreign Ministry reported a significant cyber attack on Wednesday, coinciding with the ongoing BRICS summit in Kazan. Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that the ministry experienced a large-scale distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that began early in the morning.
Zakharova described the incident as unprecedented in scale, noting that the ministry regularly faces cyber threats but this attack was notably more severe. “A massive cyberattack from abroad began this morning on the infrastructure of the official website, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s portal,” she said.
The BRICS summit, which runs from October 22 to 24, aims to bolster Moscow’s global position amid ongoing Western sanctions. The high-profile gathering underscores Russia’s efforts to strengthen ties with emerging economies.
Officials are investigating the source of the attack as the summit continues.
