Rescuers in China race to find the missing, deal dykes after deadly floods

China is bracing for a challenging weather month ahead, with forecasts indicating a continuation of harsh conditions across the country. Jia Xiaolong, deputy head of the National Climate Center, revealed on Thursday that August will bring more severe weather, with many regions expected to experience heavier rainfall compared to previous years. The nation could face up to three typhoons this month, further compounding the weather-related challenges.

Additionally, Jia warned of potential drought conditions affecting the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in central China. To mitigate the impact on agriculture, Jia suggested implementing measures such as cloud seeding to support crop growth.

In response to these weather threats, Vice Premier Liu Guozhong visited Henan province this week, urging proactive measures to minimize damage to farm output from torrential rains and floods. Henan, a critical agricultural hub known as China’s granary, produces about one-third of the country’s wheat. Ensuring a successful autumn harvest remains a top priority amidst the impending severe weather.
