Uma Ramanan Dies At 69: Tamil Playback Singer Passes Away Due To Ill Health

On Wednesday, May 1, Indian playback singer Uma Ramanan, known for her contributions to Tamil cinema, breathed her last at the age of 72. The singer, survived by her husband and fellow singer AV Ramanan, as well as her son, Vignesh Ramanan, leaves behind a legacy of memorable songs in the Tamil film industry. The cause of her demise remains undisclosed, awaiting further details regarding her funeral arrangements.

With a background in classical music, Uma Ramanan’s musical journey spanned over 35 years, encompassing more than 6,000 concerts. Collaborating with her husband AV Ramanan, she ventured into the world of playback singing, gaining prominence through her association with acclaimed composer Ilaiyaraaja. Notably, her rendition of ‘Poongathave Thaal Thiravai’ from the Tamil film ‘Nizhalgal’ marked a turning point in her career, leading to numerous collaborations with Ilaiyaraaja and other composers such as Vidyasagar, Mani Sharma, and Deva.

Uma Ramanan’s repertoire includes several chart-topping songs like ‘Bhoopalam Isaikkum’ from ‘Thooral Ninnu Pochchu’, ‘Aanandha Raagam’ from ‘Panner Pushpangal’, ‘Kanmani Nee Vara’ from ‘Thendrale Ennai Thodu’, ‘Ponn Maanae’ from ‘Oru Kaidhiyin Dairy’, ‘Aagaya Vennilave’ from ‘Arangetra Velai’, and ‘Sri Ranga Ranganathanin’ from ‘Mahanadi’, among others.

Having made her debut in 1977 with a song in ‘Sri Krishna Leela’, Uma Ramanan’s musical journey was marked by numerous collaborations and accolades. Her final contribution to the industry was the song ‘Kannum Kannumthan Kalandaachu’ for Vijay’s film ‘Thirupaachi’, composed by Mani Sharma. Her melodious voice, coupled with her husband AV Ramanan’s, resonated with audiences and left an indelible mark on the Tamil music scene.
