President Murmu and PM Modi praise Harvinder Singh for historic gold at Paris paralympics
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have extended their heartfelt congratulations to para-athlete Harvinder Singh, who clinched a historic gold medal in the men’s individual recurve open final at the Paris Paralympics. Singh’s victory marks India’s first-ever gold medal in para archery at the Paralympics.
In a dominant performance, Singh defeated Poland’s Lukasz Ciszek with a decisive 6-0 win in the final. This achievement is particularly notable as it represents India’s inaugural gold in para archery and Singh’s second consecutive medal at the Paralympics.
President Murmu expressed her admiration and congratulations via X (formerly Twitter), stating, “My heartiest congratulations to Harvinder Singh on winning the gold medal in the men’s individual recurve para archery event at Paris 2024 Paralympics. This is Harvinder’s second medal at consecutive Paralympics and the first-ever gold medal in para archery for India. His exceptional performance under tremendous pressure is inspirational. I wish he brings more glory to the tricolour.”
Prime Minister Modi also took to X to celebrate Singh’s success, calling it a “very special” achievement. He wrote, “A very special Gold in Para Archery! Congratulations to Harvinder Singh for winning the Gold medal in the Men’s Individual Recurve Open at the #Paralympics2024! His precision, focus, and unwavering spirit are outstanding. India is very happy with his accomplishment.”
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya joined in the celebrations, highlighting the significance of Singh’s victory. Mandaviya remarked, “Harvinder Singh has struck gold with unmatched precision in the Para Archery Men’s Individual Recurve Open at #Paralympics2024! Singh’s gold medal has added to India’s tally at the Paris Paralympics, where the Indian archery pair of Rakesh Kumar and Sheetal Devi previously secured a bronze medal in the mixed team compound event.
