Pantone Colour of the Year 2023 Viva Magenta and Indian wedding fashion: What designers say
Viva Magenta has been declared Pantone Colour of the Year 2023 and it is likely to dominate the Indian wedding fashion scene.
By Medha Chawla: Bursting with vim and vigour, Viva Magenta has been declared the Pantone colour of the year 2023. The hybrid colour, a nuanced crimson red tone, will be seen taking over the fashion world and becoming a prominent part of decor trends in the upcoming year. Oh, and this includes the Indian wedding fashion scene as well.
A beauteous blend of red and magenta (quintessential colours in Indian wedding fashion palette), Viva Magenta emerges as a fresh alternative for brides and grooms who wish to add a whiff of freshness to their wedding wardrobes without drifting much from the traditional aesthetic. The colour, according to Pantone, is a harbinger of joyous and optimistic celebration and thus perfectly complements the zestful wedding vibes.
Indian fashion connoisseurs, too, are rooting for Viva Magenta as the next big colour to dominate wedding wardrobes while also noting that shades closer to the ‘Colour of The Year 2023’ have already been a part of Indian styling.
PERFECT COLOUR FOR INDIAN SKIN TONE
Designer Rahul Khanna of the label Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna vouches for Viva Magenta to be a ruling shade for the upcoming wedding season. Their last couture week collection also boasted of creations in this colour. Khanna, while speaking to IndiaToday.in said that they predicted the colour to be in season as they felt that “red, deep red and fuchsia have been overdone in the last few collections.”
“Viva Magenta is one of the most fabulous colours. It is a take on between red and fuchsia. It really suits the Indian skin tone. We were the only Indian fashion designers to use this in our last couture week and I feel, this colour is going to be really in for the next two-three seasons,” he added.

A MUST-HAVE COLOUR FOR WEDDING WARDROBE
Rahul Khanna also expressed that Viva Magenta is a must-have colour for at least one of the wedding functions. “People can use it in their sherwanis and lehengas. It (Viva Magenta) is here to stay. I think people are looking for something new and bright, and this is a perfect answer to the colour red,” Khanna said adding that it “is a subtle colour, not on your face and suits all skin types.”
Khanna also shared some styling tips for grooms who wish to embrace an ivory sherwani but with a hint of Viva Magenta. “This is a perfect colour for men who are wearing ivory sherwanis, to take a stole, or do their pagdi in this new colour,” he said. “For women, adding a dupatta (Viva Magenta) or a full colour-on-colour outfit will just be an answer to the new red,” he added.
CONTEMPORARY YET CULTURALLY-RELEVANT
Fashion designer Abhinav Mishra, a favourite across the country for his mirror-work creations, also feels that Viva Magenta is a fabulous choice for 2023. “It merges the richness, warmth, and strength of natural matters with the rich, open horizons of the digital world,” he told IndiaToday.in, adding that it has been a part of Indian styling for a long time now.
Mishra said that Viva Magenta is a great choice for brides who want to embrace something unique and contemporary yet culturally-relevant, as well as for grooms who are looking to go towards a different direction than the usual light-coloured sherwanis. “This bold and beautiful colour will work wonders for summer and winter wedding clothing,” he added.

STYLING TIPS FOR BRIDES
Fashion designer Arpita Mehta, whose eponymous label is replete with modish-yet-traditional ensembles for new-age brides, expressed that Viva Magenta perfectly complements the Indian skin tone. “Viva magenta basically is a deeper, new-age version of the Rani Pink colour. It’s a beautiful, bold colour which complements our Indian skin beautifully,” she said.
“If a bride is opting for it for her sangeet, she should go for tone-on-tone embroidery with a little bit of threadwork and cutdana for shine. And, if a bride wants Viva Magenta for her wedding, she should accentuate the colour with beige-gold embroidery so that it looks rich and opulent,” Arpita Mehta said.

COLOUR COMBINATIONS TO GO WITH VIVA MAGENTA
Couturier Varun Bahl, known to blend classic Indian aesthetics with modern sensibilities, said that the “magenta colour has been a part of Indian styling for a long time now, being utilised for bright and bold bridal wear as well as contemporary silhouettes. And, I am glad to see a colour synonymous with India’s rich culture being recognised on the global stage.”
The designer also shared a few colour combinations for brides who do not wish to take the monotone route with their Viva Magenta outfits. “For the new-age minimal bride, I would suggest a combination of Viva Magenta with subtle pastels like mint, jade green and icy blue,” Bahl said.
For brides with a penchant for quirky and fun style, the designer suggested darker, higher-contrasting colours such as emerald green, dark teal, bright crimson or a royal electric blue to go with Viva Magenta hues.
