North Korea unveils new tactical missile launchers amid rising tensions with South Korea
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen the delivery of 250 new tactical ballistic missile launchers to frontier troops, according to state media KCNA. The launchers, described as a modern tactical attack weapon personally designed by Kim, are set to be deployed to units stationed near the border with South Korea.
KCNA reported that the new missile launchers are part of North Korea’s ongoing efforts to bolster its military capabilities. The announcement follows last month’s test-firing of a new tactical ballistic missile by Pyongyang.
South Korean officials have expressed concern over the deployment, suggesting that the launchers are intended to threaten or attack South Korea. “We believe these missile launchers are meant to be used in various ways, including to attack or intimidate South Korea,” said Lee Sung-joon, spokesperson for South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, during a media briefing. “Their placement near the border implies a shorter range, increasing the immediacy of the threat.”
In a speech addressing troops and military scientists, Kim Jong Un accused the United States of creating a “nuclear-based military block” that compels North Korea to enhance its military capabilities. He reiterated Pyongyang’s stance that joint military drills between the U.S. and South Korea are rehearsals for an invasion.
Seoul’s unification ministry, which handles inter-Korean affairs, condemned North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs as the primary threats to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
Kim Jong Un also highlighted North Korea’s plans to enhance its nuclear readiness to deter perceived threats and protect the country. His daughter, Kim Ju Ae, made a rare public appearance at the event, marking her first public appearance in nearly three months. South Korean lawmakers have speculated that Kim Ju Ae is being groomed as a potential future leader of North Korea, although state media have not confirmed any details regarding her political future.
The situation on the Korean Peninsula remains tense, with North Korea’s latest military advancements likely to exacerbate existing regional tensions.
