Nobel laureate Yunus arrives to lead Bangladesh, calls for law and order
Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus returned to his home country of Bangladesh on Thursday to assume leadership of a new interim government, following the dramatic resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina fled to neighboring India earlier this week in the wake of widespread student protests and violent clashes that claimed the lives of approximately 300 individuals and left thousands injured.
Upon landing at Dhaka’s airport, Yunus addressed reporters, urging a return to law and order. “Hatred and unruliness are the enemies of democracy,” Yunus stated, highlighting the need for peace and stability in the nation.
Yunus, renowned for his pioneering work in microfinance, is poised to be sworn in as the head of a team of advisers at the official residence of President Mohammed Shahabuddin. The formation of this interim government marks a significant shift, as Hasina’s Awami League party will not be represented in the new administration.
The recent political upheaval underscores the urgency for effective governance and reconciliation in Bangladesh, as the country seeks to navigate through its current crisis.
