NewJeans K-Pop controversy
A recent controversy in the K-pop world involving popular group NewJeans, their creative director, and South Korea’s influential record label has captured widespread attention.
Hybe, the entertainment giant behind BTS’s success, and the head of its subsidiary label Ador have been embroiled in a dispute, with accusations of betrayal and copying flying between them.
The tension peaked when Min Hee-jin, CEO of Ador, held an emotional two-hour press conference where she accused Hybe of betrayal and vowed to focus on NewJeans.
NewJeans, formed by Ador in 2022, is a five-member girl group whose music blends old-school R&B with playful melodies, gaining them a large following and global recognition.
The controversy began when Hybe announced an audit of Ador, alleging Ms. Min and others planned to go independent and leaked confidential information. Ms. Min denied the allegations and accused Hybe of launching a rival group, Illit, that copied NewJeans.
In response, Hybe threatened legal action against Ms. Min and filed a complaint with the police. They also expressed support for NewJeans.
The situation has captivated K-pop fans, with social media flooded by reactions. While some support Ms. Min, others urge NewJeans to distance themselves from her.
The dispute has broader implications, with gender dynamics and workplace conflicts coming into play. Hybe’s shares fell significantly amid the controversy.
It remains uncertain what will happen next, but speculation suggests the matter may end up in court. Ms. Min has expressed her intention to sue Hybe for damages, while Hybe seeks to dismiss her through a shareholders’ meeting.
Despite the turmoil, NewJeans plans to release new music, with teaser images for their upcoming double single, “How Sweet,” already unveiled.
