New team India coach
Front-Runner for New Team India Head Coach Position
VVS Laxman emerges as the top contender to replace Rahul Dravid as the chief coach of the men’s national team if Dravid opts not to reapply for the high-profile role.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah has dismissed the idea of having separate coaches for red and white ball formats, indicating that the board is seeking a single candidate to take on the role.
Dravid’s contract concludes after the T20 World Cup, giving him the option to reapply for the position. However, with the BCCI inviting applications from interested candidates by May 27, it appears the board is looking for a fresh face.
VVS Laxman, the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and former India great, is a standout choice. With three years of experience leading the NCA and overseeing the development of young Indian cricketers, Laxman is well-equipped for the role. He has also coached the senior team in Dravid’s absence, guiding them through various series.
Gautam Gambhir, known for his tactical acumen and man-management skills, is another strong contender. His successful stints as captain in the IPL and his deep understanding of modern cricket make him a viable option. However, his emotional ties with certain franchises and potential clashes with senior players might be factors to consider.
Justin Langer, the former Australian coach, could also be in the running. Known for his discipline and tactical prowess, Langer has expressed openness to the idea. His insights into Australian cricket could be invaluable, especially for the upcoming series Down Under.
While candidates like Gambhir and Ashish Nehra have proven coaching abilities in white-ball cricket, they lack experience in the longest format, which might be a consideration for the role.
