Nepal’s new ₹100 note
Nepal Unveils New ₹100 Note Featuring Controversial Territories
Nepal has announced the release of a new ₹100 currency note adorned with a map showcasing disputed territories, including Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, and Kalapani. This decision, made during a council of ministers meeting chaired by Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ reflects Nepal’s recent efforts to assert its territorial claims.
Government spokesperson Rekha Sharma informed the media about the decision, highlighting that the cabinet approved the redesign of the banknote to replace the previous map. This move comes after Nepal’s amendment to its Constitution on June 18, 2020, which officially integrated the aforementioned strategic areas into its political map.
India has responded sharply to Nepal’s territorial assertions, labeling them as “artificial enlargement” and “untenable.” India maintains its sovereignty over Lipulekh, Kalapani, and Limpiyadhura, leading to tensions between the two neighboring countries.
Nepal’s decision to feature these territories on its currency note further emphasizes the ongoing dispute between the two nations. With a border spanning over 1,850 km, Nepal shares boundaries with five Indian states: Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
The unveiling of the new currency note marks another chapter in the complex relationship between Nepal and India, highlighting the significance of territorial disputes in regional geopolitics.
