Nelly Korda makes history
In a stunning display of dominance, Nelly Korda, the newly crowned women’s golf world No. 1, clinched her 11th career title on Sunday, triumphing at the Ford Championship hosted at the Seville Golf and Country Club in Gilbert, Arizona. Facing adverse weather conditions, the 25-year-old delivered a flawless performance, carding an impressive seven-under-par 65 to secure victory by a margin of two strokes over Australian rookie Hira Naveed.
Starting the final round two shots behind the leader, Korda exuded confidence throughout the tournament, describing her win as “one of [her] least stressful.” Emphasizing her solid gameplay and ability to capitalize on key opportunities, Korda attributed her success to minimizing errors and making crucial putts. Her exemplary performance not only earned her the Ford Championship title but also etched her name in LGPA history.
With this triumph, Korda becomes the first woman to achieve three consecutive LGPA victories since 2016 and the first American to do so since Nancy Lopez’s remarkable feat in 1978. Moreover, she joins an elite group of players by clinching three LPGA Tour titles before April 1, a milestone not accomplished since Yani Tseng’s achievement 12 years prior and the first for an American since JoAnne Carner in 1980.
Reflecting on her recent stellar form, Korda expressed her enjoyment of the game and credited her success to a well-timed reset following the LPGA Drive On Championship. This period of rejuvenation, coupled with quality time spent with family and a break from the demands of professional golf, proved instrumental in her return to peak performance.
Despite Korda’s exceptional display, her closest competitor, Hira Naveed, showcased resilience and admiration for Korda’s prowess on the course. Despite falling short of victory, Naveed acknowledged the privilege of sharing the stage with Korda and expressed determination to continue improving.
Korda’s remarkable journey back to the top serves as a testament to her unwavering dedication and resilience in the face of adversity. Her achievements continue to inspire fans and fellow competitors alike, solidifying her status as a dominant force in women’s golf and setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting season ahead.
