NCERT unanimously approves name change for textbooks, replacing ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) panel’s unanimous approval of replacing “India” with “Bharat” in all NCERT textbooks for the upcoming editions marks a formal endorsement of the proposal, which had been introduced several months ago. Furthermore, the committee has recommended a focus on “Hindu victories” within these textbooks. This decision comes in the midst of political debate as the government faced criticism from the Opposition for using ‘Bharat’ instead of ‘India’ in official documents, notably in an event invitation for Prime Minister Modi and an invitation from Rashtrapati Bhawan referring to the “President of Bharat.” External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has pointed out that the term ‘Bharat’ is constitutionally significant, stating, “India, that is Bharat, is there in the Constitution.”
