Magnitude 5.7 earthquake strikes off Taiwan’s northeastern coast

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck off Taiwan’s northeastern county of Yilan on Thursday, according to the island’s Central Weather Administration. The tremor, which occurred at a depth of 9 km, was felt in the capital city of Taipei, but there have been no immediate reports of significant damage.

The earthquake caused buildings in Taipei to shake, prompting a temporary reduction in speed for subway services as a precautionary measure. Despite the intensity of the quake, authorities have not reported any major disruptions or injuries.

Taiwan, situated near the convergence of two tectonic plates, is highly susceptible to seismic activity. The island recently experienced its largest earthquake in over 25 years in April, which resulted in nine fatalities and over 900 injuries.
