Lionel Messi’s 2022 World Cup jerseys fetch $7.8M

Six jerseys worn by Lionel Messi during the 2022 World Cup have been successfully auctioned for an impressive $7.8 million. Sotheby’s head of modern collectibles, Brahm Wachter, emphasized the historic significance of these jerseys, linking them to a pivotal moment in the career of the most decorated football player in history. Among the collection was Messi’s iconic No.10 jersey worn during the World Cup final, where Argentina secured victory against France, claiming the title for the third time.

This auction places Messi’s jerseys as the third most valuable in history, following Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals jersey, which fetched a record $10.1 million in 2022, and Diego Maradona’s legendary “Hand of God” goal jersey from the 1986 World Cup, sold for $9.28 million in May 2022. Messi’s outstanding performance in the 2022 World Cup, where he scored seven goals and made three assists, earned him the Golden Ball award. Reflecting on his achievement, Messi expressed the significance of winning the elusive trophy with the national team, highlighting the hard work, sacrifice, and humility that contributed to his success.

Messi, having conquered achievements at the club and individual levels, described the World Cup victory as the pinnacle of his dreams. He emphasized the importance of perseverance, hard work, and dedication in achieving goals, expressing his newfound joy and appreciation for the game. The auction not only marks a financial milestone but also serves as a testament to the historical and emotional value associated with Messi’s remarkable career and the triumph of winning the World Cup.
