By Medha Chawla: There is no shortage of scenic tourist locations to visit in India. Every state and city has hidden jewels that will charm you with breathtaking vistas and a wonderful experience. Chembra Lake in Wayanad, Kerala, is one such hidden gem that should be on your travel itinerary.

Of course, this isn’t just any old lake. So, what makes this so unique? Well. Chembra Lake is a heart-shaped body of water surrounded by lush green hills. Are you planning a romantic holiday with your significant other? You can blame the popular lake’s form. In terms of shape, it is also known as ‘Hridayasaras’ or Heart Lake.

So romantic, right? It’s no surprise that this heart-shaped lake near Kalpetta is a popular tourist destination. You will, however, have to walk for around 3.5 kilometres (one way) to enjoy the breathtaking vista of Chembra Lake. The moderate walk begins with the Forest Service base camp. You can get there by car. According to the Kerala Tourism website, the trek is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. To gain permission for the Chembra Lake trip, you must arrive before 2 p.m.

The best time to visit is from August to May, when the weather is usually mild. So, when planning your much-anticipated Kerala vacation, make sure to include Wayanad on the itinerary and witness this natural splendour.

For the uninformed, Wayanad is a scenic hill station in Kerala with magnificent vistas to enjoy. Chembra Lake is only one of the numerous treasures that this area has to offer. Wayanad’s must-see attractions include Kuruvadweep (a river island), Banasura Dam, Pookode Lake, Soochipara waterfalls, and Meenmutty waterfalls.

How do I get to Wayanad?

The nearest airport to Wayanad is Calicut International Airport, which is about 80 kilometres away. If you want to travel by train, take one to Kozhikode and then another 80 kilometres to Wayanad.
