Kapil Parma secures Bronze at Paris Paralympics, boosting India’s medal tally

Indian judoka Kapil Parma clinched a bronze medal in the men’s -60kg J1 category at the Paris Paralympics on Thursday. Parma delivered a swift and decisive Ippon in just 33 seconds to defeat Brazil’s Elielton de Oliveira and secure his place on the podium.

Earlier in the day, Parma faced a setback in the semi-finals, where he was defeated 0-10 by Iran’s Banitaba Khorram Abadi. However, he demonstrated resilience by bouncing back strongly in the bronze medal match. Parma had earlier showcased his skill by overpowering Venezuela’s Marcos Dennis Blanco with a dominant 10-0 victory to reach the final four.

In the women’s division, Kokila’s campaign ended on a disappointing note. She was eliminated after a 0-10 loss to Ukraine’s Yuliia Ivanytska in the preliminary round of the J2 -48kg category.

Kapil Parma’s victory has contributed to India’s impressive medal tally at the Paris Paralympics, which now stands at 25. This includes five golds, nine silvers, and 11 bronze medals, surpassing the previous record of 19 medals set at the Tokyo Paralympics. India currently holds the 14th position in the overall medal standings.

In para shooting, Indian athletes Sidhartha Babu and Mona Agarwal faced challenges in the mixed 50m rifle prone SH1 qualification. Sidhartha Babu finished 22nd with a score of 615.8 points, while Mona Agarwal placed 30th with 610.5 points. Despite strong individual performances—Babu’s best series scoring 104.6 points and Agarwal’s highest being 104.5 points—their inconsistency prevented them from advancing to the final.

India continues to demonstrate strong performances across various sports at the Paris Paralympics, maintaining a significant presence on the global stage.
