Jay Shah elected as ICC chairman: a new era for global cricket

Jay Shah has been elected unopposed as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), set to assume office on December 1, 2024. This election represents a significant milestone in Shah’s distinguished cricketing career, following his tenure as Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) since October 2019 and his role as Chairman of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021.

Shah’s appointment comes after the current ICC Chairman, Greg Barclay, chose not to seek a third term. With no other candidates stepping forward, Shah emerged as the sole nominee for the position. His new role places him at a pivotal moment for the sport, particularly with cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics on the horizon.

In a statement following his election, Shah expressed his gratitude and outlined his vision for the future. He emphasized his commitment to expanding cricket’s global reach, balancing various formats, leveraging advanced technologies, and introducing high-profile events to new markets. Shah highlighted the importance of innovation and fresh perspectives in promoting the sport, especially in anticipation of cricket’s Olympic debut.

As the youngest individual to lead the ICC, Shah follows in the footsteps of prominent Indian figures who have held the role, including Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar. His election is expected to mark a new era for the ICC, steering the organization through an evolving global landscape and furthering cricket’s international appeal.
