Undersea twin tunnels in South Mumbai should open soon if everything goes according to plan. It is a component of the nearly finished INR 12,721 crore Mumbai Coastal Road Project. The first undersea tunnel in India is expected to open by November 2023, according to reports.
India’s first undersea twin tunnels in south Mumbai are almost finished, more than two years after a massive Chinese Tunnel Boring Machine started slicing through difficult geological strata.

The tunnels, which are expected to begin around Girgaon (before Marine Drive) and proceed north under the Arabian Sea, Girgaon Chowpatty, and Malabar Hill, would reportedly open in November and will terminate at Breach Candy’s Priyadarshini Park. The Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is building the 2.07 km tunnels as part of the INR 12,721 crore Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP).
According to estimates, the high-speed coastal road is anticipated to cut the 45-minute trip from Girgaon to Worli in half during peak hours. The 10.58 km Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) connects Marine Drive to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

The tunnels will have a diameter of 12.19 metres, be 17–20 metres below sea level, include six crosswalks—four for pedestrians and two for drivers—and three 3.2-meter-wide channels in each tunnel. The tunnels’ deepest point is 72 metres away from Malabar Hill.
According to reports, the TBM construction and launch started a year ago, while the boring work started in January 2021.
