India initiates payment for hybrid power projects to boost energy in Sri Lankan islands
India has commenced the first payment for a significant Hybrid Power Projects initiative aimed at enhancing the energy infrastructure of three remote islands off the northern coast of Sri Lanka. The announcement was made as India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, formally transferred the payment to Sulakshana Jayawardena, Secretary of the Ministry of Power and Energy and Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA).
This initiative, supported by an $11 million grant from India, is designed to benefit the islands of Delft, Nainativu, and Analaitivu, which are currently isolated from Sri Lanka’s national power grid. The project highlights India’s ongoing commitment to bolstering its neighbor’s infrastructure and energy security.
The development follows a series of diplomatic engagements by High Commissioner Jha throughout Sri Lanka. Last week, Jha visited the Eastern Province, where he met with Governor Senthil Thondaman and State Minister of Trade and Environment S. Viyalendiran. Their discussions focused on various projects under Indian assistance and the latest political developments in Sri Lanka.
In a post on X, the Indian High Commission shared, “During his visit to Eastern Province, HC Santosh Jha met Governor Hon. Senthil Thondaman & State Min. of Trade & Environment Hon. S. Viyalendiran, discussing ongoing and planned projects in the province under Indian assistance and exchanging views on political developments.”
During his tour, Jha also interacted with local business communities in Batticaloa, engaging with the Batticaloa District Chamber of Commerce and the Batticaloa Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He provided insights on potential business opportunities and emphasized the economic aspects of the bilateral relationship between India and Sri Lanka.
Additionally, Jha visited Polonnaruwa to review the progress of the Rai Bhasha Multi-Ethnic School, a key project under India’s High Impact Community Development Projects. This initiative underscores India’s dedication to promoting education and cultural integration in Sri Lanka.
On August 20, Jha distributed solar lanterns to beneficiaries in Pitakanda, Rattotta Estate, reinforcing India’s commitment to improving the living conditions of the IOT community in Sri Lanka’s plantation regions.
