India calls for ceasefire and hostage release in Gaza strip at UN security council
India has reiterated its urgent call for an immediate and complete ceasefire in the Gaza Strip during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Open Debate on the Middle East. Speaking on Wednesday, India’s Deputy Representative to the UN, R. Ravindra, emphasized the need for the unconditional release of hostages held amid the ongoing conflict.
Ravindra condemned the recent terror attacks on Israel and expressed deep concern over the escalating violence and civilian casualties in the Israel-Hamas conflict. He stressed the importance of restraint and de-escalation, advocating for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.
“India stands firmly committed to adhering to international law and humanitarian principles,” Ravindra stated. He called for timely and sustained humanitarian assistance in the Gaza Strip, urging unrestricted access to relief services.
He commended the roles of countries such as Qatar and Egypt for their ongoing diplomatic efforts in the region and reaffirmed India’s consistent position across various multilateral forums.
Ravindra reiterated India’s longstanding support for a two-state solution, advocating for the establishment of a sovereign and independent state of Palestine alongside Israel, while ensuring Israel’s security needs are respected.
Highlighting India’s commitment to Palestine, he noted that India’s developmental assistance has reached approximately USD 120 million over the years, including a contribution of USD 35 million to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). He confirmed the recent transfer of USD 2.5 million as part of this ongoing support.
Concluding his remarks, Ravindra expressed India’s readiness to continue engaging with the region to promote lasting peace and stability in West Asia.
