High alert in Ahmedabad as India vs. Pakistan cricket match nears: Traffic restrictions and more

Security and traffic arrangements in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, have been significantly heightened ahead of the much-anticipated India vs. Pakistan World Cup cricket match at Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday. Over 9,000 security personnel are deployed in and around the city, along with various traffic diversions implemented for October 14.

To facilitate spectator commuting, the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has extended Ahmedabad metro services by three hours, running from 6:20 am to 1 am on the days when the 2023 World Cup matches will be held.

Drones with extended flight time and a 5-kilometer coverage area are monitoring the stadium’s vicinity. More than 11,000 security personnel, including Gujarat Police, NSG, RAF, and home guards, will be present in Ahmedabad and at Narendra Modi Stadium. Chetak Commando teams with armored vehicles will also be deployed.

Authorities have instructed Gujarat to remain on high alert, particularly focusing on anti-social elements and sensitive areas, to prevent any untoward incidents during and after the India-Pakistan World Cup cricket match. Cybercrime teams, crime branch, economic offenses wing, and special economic group personnel will also be stationed at the stadium.

Ahmedabad’s crime branch, Anti-Terrorist Squad, and Special Operations Group are prepared to address anti-social elements and potential security threats. Senior IPS officers and deputy commissioner of police (DCP) rank officers will supervise and guide the personnel during the match day.

The Ahmedabad metro services will be available from 6:20 am to 1 am on October 14. Western Railway will operate Superfast Special Trains between Mumbai Central and Ahmedabad for spectators’ convenience.

Ahmedabad Traffic Police recommends advance parking booking on the ‘Show My Parking’ App to ensure a hassle-free experience. Authorities urge social media users to refrain from sharing provocative or communal posts.

Renowned artists, including Arijit Singh, Shankar Mahadevan, and Sukhvinder Singh, will perform in the pre-match ceremony. The IMD forecasts clear skies on the day of the India vs. Pakistan match, dispelling earlier reports of potential drizzles.

Security measures also include restrictions on bringing ‘gutka’ inside the stadium, as requested by the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA). The highly anticipated India vs. Pakistan Cricket World Cup match is set to take place at Narendra Modi Stadium in the Motera area of Ahmedabad on October 14.
