Heavy monsoon rains cause devastation in Nepal: 12 dead, 4 missing
Nepal has been struck by severe flooding and landslides due to ongoing monsoon rains, resulting in significant damage and loss of life. Over the past 24 hours, 12 individuals have died in the districts of Baglung and Gumli. In addition, four people remain missing and ten others have been injured following landslides on Tuesday.
Local authorities have transported the injured to the Burtibang Primary Health Center in Baglung for treatment. A rescue operation for the missing individuals commenced early Wednesday morning. A Nepali Army helicopter, dispatched to aid in the rescue efforts, was unable to land in the affected areas due to adverse weather conditions. Health workers from the Nepal Army have been providing medical care to the injured on-site.
The landslides were triggered as heavy rainwater swept away soil and debris from the roadsides. The torrential rains have also caused significant disruptions to transportation. Major highways, including the Sagarmatha Highway in Khotang and the BP Highway and Araniko Highway in Kavrepalanchok, have been blocked by landslides. Additionally, the Muglin-Malekhu road and the Prithvi Highway in Ichchhakamana, Chitwan, have also been affected.
Since the onset of the monsoon season on June 10, Nepal has reported a total of 165 fatalities due to monsoon-induced disasters as of Tuesday evening. Efforts to provide aid and restore normalcy are ongoing amidst challenging conditions.
