Harshit Rana’s walking the talk
Harshit Rana’s outstanding performance in this IPL, with sixteen wickets in nine innings at a strike rate even better than Jasprit Bumrah’s, should be the headline. However, social media scrutiny can be harsh, especially when his celebrated dismissal of Virat Kohli carried a hint of controversy.
Despite Hawk-Eye confirming that Harshit’s full toss was within the rules, Kohli’s reaction sparked a brief controversy. Harshit, aware of the situation, chose not to escalate the matter further.
Following his one-match ban for an unusual reaction, Harshit returned with another wicket and maintained his composure, indicating a mature approach. Despite encountering controversies, Harshit continues to thrive on success in the IPL.
Harshit wouldn’t have wished for his IPL journey to unfold any differently, considering the transient nature of success in the tournament. Transitioning from a nets bowler at Gujarat Titans in 2022 to becoming a key pace bowler for KKR within two years required a blend of courage and a touch of luck.
Former Kolkata Knight Riders mentor David Hussey revealed that Harshit’s journey to KKR began when Rasikh Salam’s injury prompted the need for a replacement player. Nitish Rana, recognizing Harshit’s talent, recommended him to Brendon McCullum, the former KKR head coach. Subsequently, Abhishek Nayar, KKR’s assistant coach, arranged a trial for Harshit, leading to his first IPL contract.
Harshit’s debut didn’t unfold as expected, with his second ball being dispatched for a boundary. However, he quickly recovered by claiming Mitchell Marsh’s wicket off the very next ball. This marked the beginning of a journey that has firmly established him as one of the most promising emerging fast bowlers in the IPL.
Harshit’s ability to consistently bowl at speeds exceeding 140 kilometers per hour was the initial confirmation of his talent, aided by his towering height of 6’2″, which facilitates effective delivery of shorter length deliveries. However, what truly sets him apart is his remarkable skill in reading the pitch, adjusting his lengths accordingly, and intelligently varying his pace based on the conditions. “It’s challenging to assess wickets initially, but once you understand them, it becomes easier,” Harshit remarked during this IPL season.
Harshit openly acknowledges the invaluable support provided by backroom guidance, particularly in terms of data analysis and matchup assessment. However, the fundamental belief that fuels his determination stems from the trust vested in him by the team management.
Reflecting on Kolkata Knight Riders’ narrow one-run victory against Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore, Harshit emphasized the importance of maintaining belief amidst fluctuating match situations. He credited the unwavering faith instilled by figures like Gautam Gambhir and Chandrakant Pandit, who constantly reinforce the message that as long as the match is ongoing, victory remains attainable.
Harshit demonstrated his resilience when faced with pressure situations. During a crucial moment against RCB, with the opposition needing 37 runs from 18 balls, he bowled a tight over, conceding only six runs and claiming a wicket, making the chase more challenging. In the final over against Sunrisers Hyderabad, with 13 runs needed off six balls and a formidable Heinrich Klaasen on strike, Harshit initially conceded a six but bounced back brilliantly with two wickets, ultimately securing a four-run victory for KKR.
The key to this remarkable comeback? Undoubtedly, Harshit’s nerves of steel played a crucial role, but he also received some calming advice. “He was a bit nervous when he was coming to bowl,” revealed KKR captain Shreyas Iyer afterward. “So I told him, ‘Even if we lose, it’s fine’.” Harshit didn’t let that happen, showcasing his resilience in adversity.
Despite bowlers enduring a challenging season in this IPL, Harshit’s unwavering determination in tough situations highlights his tenacity. At just 22 years old, Harshit made his first-class debut for Delhi in 2022, and his inclusion in an ‘A’ tour of South Africa indicates a promising future if he continues to excel. Harshit remains focused on his long-term goal of representing India, emphasizing that his performance on any given day will shape his future, whether for KKR, his state team, or the national squad.
