Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh killed in Iran, Hamas says
Ismail Haniyeh, a prominent leader of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, was killed in an attack on his residence in Tehran early Wednesday morning, according to statements from Hamas and Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
Hamas condemned the incident, accusing Israel of a “treacherous Zionist raid” on Haniyeh’s home. The group mourned the loss of Haniyeh, who had been in Tehran for the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new president just the day before.
The Revolutionary Guards confirmed the attack, stating that Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed. They added that the cause of the attack is currently under investigation and further details will be released soon.
The killing of Haniyeh marks a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between Hamas and Israel, and has drawn international attention to the increasingly volatile situation in the region.
