Fair trade for Chinese cars

Germany's Scholz in China: we want fair auto market but no dumping | Reuters

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the importance of an open and equitable European market for Chinese cars during his address to students at Tongji University in Shanghai on Monday. Scholz, accompanied by three ministers and top German executives, is currently on a visit to China, closely watched for indications of Europe’s stance towards what it perceives as Chinese goods flooding its markets.

Scholz stressed the necessity of fair competition, cautioning against dumping, overproduction, and intellectual property violations. He underscored the significance of allowing companies to establish local production facilities without bureaucratic impediments.

While not explicitly naming China, Scholz highlighted the principle that smaller nations should not live in fear of larger ones, and borders should remain unchanged through coercion.

The Chancellor is scheduled to meet President Xi Jinping on Tuesday, where he intends to address concerns about China’s support for Russia’s wartime economy and potential implications for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Additionally, both the German government and businesses remain vigilant regarding any future disputes concerning Taiwan.

Scholz drew parallels between international relations and neighborly interactions, advocating for mutual respect and peaceful coexistence, even with powerful neighbors. He emphasized the importance of maintaining amicable relations to ensure security and stability.

The Chancellor’s remarks signal Germany’s commitment to advocating for fair trade practices while navigating complex geopolitical dynamics in the region.
