Gambhir era begins with team India’s thumping 43-run win over Sri Lanka

India seized a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka on Saturday, despite a valiant effort from Pathum Nissanka that ultimately fell short.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, India posted a formidable 213/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav led the charge with a blistering 58 off just 26 balls, while Rishabh Pant added a crucial 49. Yashasvi Jaiswal contributed with a quick 36. Matheesha Pathirana stood out for Sri Lanka with a four-wicket haul, ending with figures of 4/40.

In reply, Sri Lanka appeared to be on course for a successful chase, reaching 140-1 in 14 overs. Kusal Mendis set the tone with a quickfire 45 from 27 deliveries. Pathum Nissanka showcased his brilliance with a commanding 79, including four sixes and seven fours. However, the momentum shifted dramatically when Nissanka was dismissed, misjudging an arm ball from Axar Patel and inadvertently chopping it onto his stumps.

The collapse was swift and severe as Sri Lanka lost four wickets for just 20 runs. The innings unraveled as they were bowled out for 170 in 19.2 overs. Riyan Parag’s part-time leg-spin proved highly effective, claiming 3 wickets for just 5 runs. Arshdeep Singh, Ravi Bishnoi, and Mohammed Siraj also played pivotal roles in dismantling the lower order.

Suryakumar Yadav was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his explosive innings, which helped set up the win.

The second T20I will be held on Sunday at 7:00 PM at the same venue, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Brief Score:
– Sri Lanka: 170 all out in 19.2 overs (Pathum Nissanka 79, Kusal Mendis 45; Riyan Parag 3/5)
– India: 213/7 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 58, Rishabh Pant 49; Matheesha Pathirana 4/40)
