G.O.A.T. Cristiano Ronaldo’s 900th career goal secures Portugal’s win over Croatia in Nations League opener

Portugal launched their Nations League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Croatia on Thursday, highlighted by Cristiano Ronaldo’s historic 900th career goal. The match, held at Portugal’s home ground, saw Diogo Dalot initially put the hosts ahead, only for him to later score an own goal that allowed Croatia to briefly close the gap.

Dalot opened the scoring early in the seventh minute. Following a deft chipped pass from Bruno Fernandes, Dalot eluded Croatian defender Borna Sosa and slotted the ball through the legs of the goalkeeper to give Portugal the lead.

Ronaldo, who had not found the net in Portugal’s five Euro 2024 matches, marked his milestone in the 34th minute. He met a precise cross from Nuno Mendes and tapped in from close range to extend Portugal’s lead.

However, the lead was reduced just before halftime when Dalot inadvertently deflected a sliding effort from Sosa into his own net. Despite Croatia’s efforts, the second half remained scoreless, securing the win for Portugal.

In the other League A Group 1 fixture on Thursday, Poland edged out Scotland 3-2. Portugal will next face Scotland, while Croatia will take on Poland on Sunday.
