First female CISF DG
Nina Singh, a distinguished IPS officer of the 1989 batch from the Rajasthan cadre, has made history by becoming the first woman Director General of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Responsible for securing airports across India and the Delhi Metro, Singh, currently serving as Special DG, has been appointed to the prestigious role until her superannuation on July 31, 2024. Prior to this appointment, she held the position of DG of the civil rights and anti-human trafficking cell. Singh is celebrated not only for her groundbreaking role in the CISF but also as the first woman to lead the Rajasthan state police force among six DG-rank officers.
During her notable career, Singh played a key role in high-profile cases such as the Sheena Bora murder and Jiah Khan suicide investigations during her tenure at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Her academic achievements include a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University in the United States. Acknowledging her professional excellence, she was honored with the Ati Utkrisht Seva Medal in 2020. Singh’s work focuses on women in distress and accessibility, evident in her contributions to research papers with Nobel laureates Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo. She has also been instrumental in projects aimed at improving the approachability of police stations.
Apart from her illustrious career, Singh has actively contributed to social initiatives, including designing an outreach program for the state women’s commission. Married to IAS officer Rohit Kumar Singh, currently serving as the secretary of the consumer affairs ministry, Nina Singh’s appointment aligns with the central government’s recent emphasis on empowering women in leadership roles within the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). As the head of the CISF, she will lead a force of 1.76 lakh personnel entrusted with the security of Delhi Metro, civil airports, and critical aerospace and nuclear installations.
