External affairs minister S Jaishankar briefs PM Modi on Bangladesh’s political crisis
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the escalating political situation in Bangladesh, according to sources on Monday. The briefing follows a dramatic turn of events in Dhaka, where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned amid widespread protests.
Sheikh Hasina departed Dhaka earlier in the day and arrived at Hindon Air Base near New Delhi on a C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft. It remains uncertain whether she will remain in Delhi or travel elsewhere, with speculation suggesting a potential move to London.
In response to the crisis, Air India has canceled all scheduled flights to and from Dhaka with immediate effect. The airline stated that it is monitoring the situation closely and offering a one-time waiver on rescheduling and cancellation charges for passengers with confirmed bookings. “Safety of our guests and crew remains our foremost priority,” Air India said in a statement.
The resignation of Sheikh Hasina has sparked both celebrations and protests across Bangladesh. In Dhaka, reports indicate that people have stormed Ganabhaban, the Prime Minister’s residence, and the Parliament building, looting and vandalizing property. The chaotic scenes have led to concerns about public safety and stability.
In response to the unrest, Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman is expected to engage in direct talks with student and teacher representatives. This development follows a circular issued by the Directorate of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Monday evening, indicating efforts to address the mounting tensions and restore order.
The situation remains fluid as the country grapples with the aftermath of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and the ensuing political instability.
