England edge past Netherlands in thrilling Euro 2024 semifinal

Substitute Ollie Watkins emerged as the hero for England, scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner to secure a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in the Euro 2024 semifinal clash in Dortmund on Wednesday night.

The match began with a bang as Xavi Simons stunned England early on with a spectacular goal, firing the Dutch ahead after just seven minutes with a blistering strike into the top corner. England, however, responded swiftly, equalizing through Harry Kane’s penalty in the 18th minute, awarded after a VAR review for a foul on Kane in the box.

The first half continued to deliver end-to-end action, with both teams creating numerous chances. Phil Foden came agonizingly close to putting England in front, only to see his effort cleared off the line by Denzel Dumfries. The Dutch defender later hit the crossbar with a powerful header, while Foden himself struck the post with a curling shot.

As the game progressed into the second half, both teams displayed resilience and tactical awareness, keeping the score level as the clock wound down. With extra time looming and tension mounting, England manager Gareth Southgate made a bold move, bringing on substitutes Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins in the 80th minute.

The gamble paid off spectacularly when Palmer, known for his creative playmaking, threaded a precise pass to Watkins in stoppage time. Watkins, who had only recently entered the fray, showed composure and skill as he unleashed a stunning strike into the far corner, sparking jubilant celebrations among the English contingent.

“This is history made – an amazing achievement,” remarked Harry Kane post-match, emphasizing the team’s readiness to seize crucial moments. Watkins himself expressed elation, having waited patiently for his opportunity: “I’ve been waiting for that moment for weeks, I’m delighted.”

England’s transformation throughout the match was evident, with a marked improvement in their attacking prowess compared to earlier tournament performances. The trio of Foden, Jude Bellingham, and Bukayo Saka showcased their club form, injecting flair and energy into England’s gameplay.

For the Dutch, despite their valiant efforts and moments of dominance, particularly in the latter stages of the game, it was a heartbreaking end. Ronald Koeman, their coach, acknowledged the fine margins in football: “Sometimes that’s football – they scored a great goal.”

With this thrilling victory, England advances to their second consecutive European Championship final, where they will face Spain in Berlin on Sunday. As Gareth Southgate aptly put it, “We have given people some amazing nights but we are not finished,” signaling England’s determination to cap off their Euro 2024 campaign with glory.

The clash between England and Spain promises to be a fitting finale to what has been a memorable tournament, filled with surprises and standout performances.
