Diwali celebrations illuminate Times Square
Times Square erupted in vibrant color and joy over the weekend as hundreds gathered to celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights. The event brought together both the Indian community and New Yorkers from all backgrounds, showcasing a dazzling array of Indian culture in one of the world’s most iconic settings.
The festivities included spirited performances from various cultural groups, each reflecting the rich diversity and heritage of India. A lively Diwali fair enhanced the celebratory atmosphere, offering attendees a taste of traditional food, crafts, and entertainment.
Among the distinguished guests were City Mayor Eric Adams, New York State Assemblywoman Jennifer Rajkumar, Senator Chuck Schumer, and Binaya Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York. Pradhan addressed the enthusiastic crowd, highlighting Diwali’s role in fostering unity and cultural exchange among communities.
Since its inception in 2013, Diwali at Times Square has aimed to promote the vibrancy of India’s culture, art, and traditions. Last year marked a significant milestone when New York City officially recognized Diwali as a school holiday, a proud moment for the approximately 5 million Indian-Americans in the city.
This year’s celebrations not only honored the festival’s rich heritage but also underscored the spirit of togetherness that Diwali embodies. As lights twinkled in the heart of Manhattan, the event served as a reminder of the shared values of community and celebration.
