Delhi faces Diwali traffic chaos
Heavy traffic in Delhi and neighboring regions has surged since Friday as commuters head home for Diwali celebrations. On Saturday morning, images revealed slow-moving traffic towards Anand Vihar ISBT and the railway station. ‘Dhanteras’ on Friday evening saw crowded roads at Ghazipur border, Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, and Delhi-Meerut Expressway. The influx occurred despite government calls to curb vehicular pollution, including the consideration of ‘odd-even’ measures.
Social media posts from frustrated netizens highlighted blocked roads, with one user reporting Nangloi road congestion. Some expressed irritation at the early morning traffic, while another mentioned being stuck on Delhi-Meerut Expressway for an hour on Saturday morning. Delhi Traffic Police issued a festive advisory ahead of Diwali and Dhanteras, anticipating high-volume traffic in key market areas and advising the use of public transport.
The advisory identified crowded areas like Chandni Chowk, Connaught Place, Sarojini Nagar, and others, urging motorists to remain patient and consider alternative transportation options during the pre-Diwali rush. Despite these warnings, the surge in traffic reflects the challenges in managing congestion during the festive season.
