CAS Ad Hoc division dismisses Vinesh Phogat’s application for silver medal

In a recent development from the Paris Olympics, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ad hoc division has dismissed the application filed by Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat for a silver medal in the women’s 50kg event. The CAS issued a statement on Wednesday, affirming that the application, which was submitted on August 7, has been rejected.

Phogat’s request followed her disqualification on August 7, the morning of the women’s 50kg final, for exceeding the weight limit by 100 grams during the weigh-in. She was disqualified just before she was set to compete against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the United States for the gold medal.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) initially announced that the CAS verdict would be delivered on August 13 at 9:30 pm IST. However, the decision was postponed to August 16. The deadline for the Sole Arbitrator, Hon Dr Annabelle Bennett, was previously extended by CAS to August 13.

Phogat had advanced to the gold medal match by defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals. Following her disqualification, Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling the day after the incident.

This ruling concludes the legal pursuit by Phogat for a medal, reflecting the stringent regulations and outcomes of Olympic sports adjudication.
