Box Office: ‘Scream VI’ Strong start of $5.7 Previews
“Scream VI” is off to a strong start at the box office, earning $5.7 million in Thursday previews from 3,125 theaters, including a special fan event. This is compared to the $3.5 million in previews for last year’s Scream and the $5.5 million in previews for last weekend’s Creed III.
The film has received strong exits from audiences and is expanding into a total of 3,675 cinemas today. It is projected to have a series-best domestic debut of at least $35 million over Oscar weekend for Paramount and Spyglass.
It will be interesting to see how the film performs in the coming weeks and whether it can maintain its box office momentum.
It seems that the last Scream film, which was released in January 2022, had an impressive showing at the box office for the pandemic era, opening to $30 million domestically. However, the biggest North American start of the franchise still belongs to 2000’s Scream 3, which earned $34.7 million at the box office, not adjusted for inflation. It will be interesting to see if Scream VI can surpass these figures and become the highest-grossing film in the franchise.
“Scream VI” follows the survivors of the previous installment as they leave Woodsboro for New York City, with Ghostface in close pursuit. The film was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who run Radio Silence Productions with Chad Villella. The star-studded cast includes Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, Hayden Panettiere, Courteney Cox, and several franchise newcomers.
On the other hand, Sony’s sci-fi dinosaur movie 65, directed by A Quiet Place writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, stars Adam Driver as an astronaut who crash-lands on a mysterious planet 65 million years in the past. Despite its pedigree, the movie has received mostly negative reviews from critics and is only tracking to open in the $7 million to $9 million range, with competition from Scream VI for the younger adult audience. The movie was co-financed by Bron Studios and TSG and reportedly cost $45 million to make. It earned $1.2 million in previews.
