Barbora Krejcikova crowned Wimbledon champion in thrilling final
Barbora Krejcikova has captured the Wimbledon title after a hard-fought victory over Jasmine Paolini, winning in three sets: 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. The 28-year-old Czech star secures her second Grand Slam title, adding to her 2021 French Open triumph.
Krejcikova, seeded 31st, displayed remarkable resilience throughout the match, particularly in the decisive set where she faced two break points in the final game before sealing her victory with her third Championship point. Her win makes her the second consecutive Czech player to lift the prestigious Venus Rosewater Dish, following Marketa Vondrousova’s victory last year.
“I don’t have the words,” an emotional Krejcikova said on Centre Court. “It’s unbelievable what just happened. It’s the best day of my tennis career and the best day of my life.” She dedicated her victory to her former mentor and 1998 Wimbledon champion, Jana Novotna, visibly moved as she saw her name alongside Novotna’s on the winners’ board.
In addition to Krejcikova’s triumph, British player Henry Patten achieved a historic feat by becoming the first British champion of the 2024 Championships, winning the men’s doubles title alongside Finnish partner Harri Heliovaara.
Looking ahead, tennis fans are eagerly awaiting tomorrow’s highly anticipated rematch between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles final. Alcaraz, 21, defeated Djokovic, 37, in last year’s thrilling five-set final and is favored to defend his title. Djokovic, however, is aiming to make history by securing his eighth Wimbledon title, which would tie him with Roger Federer for the most men’s titles at the All England Club.
The excitement continues to build as Wimbledon 2024 reaches its climax.
