Bangladesh supreme court chief justice announces resignation amid protests
Supreme Court Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan has announced his decision to resign from his position, following intense student protests that occurred over the weekend. Speaking to the media at the Supreme Court this afternoon, Hasan confirmed he will submit his resignation letter to the President after fulfilling necessary formalities.
The Chief Justice’s resignation comes in response to a student-led protest on Saturday morning, during which demonstrators issued an ultimatum for him and the judges of the Appellate Division to step down by 1 p.m. The protestors had threatened to besiege the judges’ residences if their demands were not met.
In related political developments, Awami League joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif took to Facebook to extend congratulations to the newly sworn interim government led by Prof. Yunus. Hanif also called on the interim administration to implement stringent measures to curb the ongoing violence, including killings, looting, and arson attacks across the country. This political transition followed the ousting of the previous Awami League-led government.
Meanwhile, on Friday, 29 of the 50 police stations under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) resumed operations. However, 21 police stations remain closed. This partial resumption follows an order from newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Mainul Islam, who instructed all police personnel to report to their stations within 24 hours. The IGP also appealed to the public for assistance in ensuring police personnel return to their duties.
